Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons) |
Hearing loss affects one in
three seniors over the age of 65, and two out of three over the age of
75. 13.6% of Americans 65 to 74 years of age reported having vision
loss, and 21.7% of Americans 75 years of age and over reported having
vision loss. Join Bonnie O’Leary and Debbie Jones of the Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons as they highlight some of the most important considerations about hearing loss and resources available to help cope with it. This interactive workshop will feature a demonstration of assistive listening devices by Resource and Technology Specialist, Debbie Jones. She will also provide detailed information about the new Technology Assistance Program, “Loan to Own”, funded through the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Outreach Manager, Bonnie O’Leary, will focus on myths and truths about hearing loss, factors affecting lip-reading, how to identify hearing loss in someone, and how to solve various communication challenges. She will play a demo CD simulating high frequency hearing loss, give all attendees a spelling test, and test participants’ knowledge of hearing health with a short questionnaire. A volunteer or two may be called upon for a short role-playing skit.
